What is self care?
What do you think of when you hear the term self-care? Bubble baths, a massage? a day in the salon? While yes those things do make you feel good and may momentarily recharge you, self-care goes much deeper than that. Somewhere in the past it became considered selfish to practice these rituals or it was only something we allowed ourselves on special occasions or as a treat. In simple terms, self-care is taking care of yourself and it needs to be done daily. Nurturing yourself through daily rituals gives you the energy to show up as your higher self everyday.
While bubble baths and spa days are great, there is so much more to our wellbeing than our physical bodies. We need to recharge on a physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual level. Giving attention to these aspects of our beings helps us to reclaim our power. It grounds us and gives us the ability to get in touch with our own energy which helps us make intentional decisions while remaining calm and at peace.
Here are some easy self-care rituals to incorporate into your everyday life.
Physical
Your body does so much for you, it shows up every day and we mostly take it for granted until something goes wrong. It is usually the first thing we neglect when life gets busy. Our physical bodies need nurturing, movement and rest.
Intellectual
Being intentional about how you use your mind can greatly improve your mental wellbeing. Giving your brain something new to learn can keep your mind sharp and inspired.
Emotional
Giving yourself a opportunity to express your feelings regularly and safely helps to stop them from boiling over or being expressed at a less desirable time. Checking in with your heart helps you become more aware of yourself and your trigger points.
Social
We all have different social needs depending on our personality. It’s important to find the balance that best suits you. Too little can lead you to feel lonely and neglected while too much can make you feel overwhelmed and socially exhausted.
Spiritual
Nurturing your spirit and deepening your sense of meaning connects you to your higher self. Your higher self is who you are meant to be and what you are meant to offer to the world.
Prioritising self-care in your life gives you mental clarity, grounds, and nurtures you. Self-care is not one size fits all, it needs to be customised to your needs. The goal is to take small steps every day to nurture your mind, body and soul. Start small by adding some simple rituals into your daily life.
